Gearing

A significant number of modern 1000cc sport bikes have very tall 1st gears allowing them to top out at over 90mph. The 600cc class has much more peak power than torque so running the engine high in the revs is important to access power. In both cases, we can make the bikes much more user friendly by changing the front and rear sprockets thereby changing the gearing. This takes away a lot of top end speed, but as we all want to avoid jail time, that’s not a bad thing.

Gearing is most critical at the track in terms of being in the right gear and having the engine at the right rpm.  This OnTheThrottle video takes us a little more into the rationale;

top speed versus acceleration
